Adam Lo OAM is an occupational therapist, mental health clinician and arts health practitioner/advocate. Adam works in Metro South Health’s Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) in Queensland, across clinical settings as well as in partnerships development, community liaison and education. He is the creator and Festival Director of the Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival and is currently researching the link between creative activities and mental health.
Elisa Yule is a lecturer in occupational therapy at the Australian Catholic University (ACU). Elisa joined ACU in 2013 when the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy course commenced on the Sydney campus and she has been involved in developing and teaching units about mental health, counselling and group work, community development and contextual determinants of health. Before entering academia, Elisa worked as an occupational therapist in adult mental health services in Australia and in international development programs in Nepal.
Elisa is committed to preparing students for successful careers in contemporary mental health services. This is reflected in her recent teaching and research initiatives which have focused on demonstrating the important role and contribution of consumers in the education and development of capabilities for recovery-oriented practice by occupational therapy students, as well as exploring new methods for increasing consumer participation in the design, delivery and evaluation of curricula. Elisa has also been involved in other research studies exploring issues such as consumer-driven recovery plans, employer perspectives on the skills, knowledge and attributes required by occupational therapists in mental health practice, and consumer roles in community mental health services.
Gemma Jamsek has worked in forensic mental health settings for more than ten years, including as Senior Therapist of a multidisciplinary therapy team at The Forensic Hospital in Sydney. She is currently working with the NSW Community Forensic Mental Health Service (CFMHS), a consultation and liaison service supporting forensic patients in the community and civil patients presenting with a high risk of harm to others. Gemma has also provided sessional tutoring for occupational therapy students at the Australian Catholic University. She has co-authored a number of academic papers based on a research project investigating Occupation Centred Practice. Gemma is passionate about enabling occupational opportunities and outcomes within restrictive or challenging environments.
Dr Kirsti Haracz is a lecturer in occupational therapy at the University of Newcastle. Kirsti worked in mental health settings in Australia and England before commencing her academic career in 2006. The field of mental health recovery remains central to Kirsti's work in her research and teaching and she has a particular interest in the nexus between physical and mental health and the role of lifestyle in promoting health and wellbeing. Kirsti is also passionate about helping to effectively prepare occupational therapy graduates for mental health practice.
Mary is an occupational therapist with over 20 years’ experience working in acute mental health. Mary has a strong commitment to clinician research, and she has been involved in the Mental Health Forum in its various forms since the early 1990s. Mary feels that the forum provides mental health occupational therapist and excellent opportunity to connect, present, share ideas and develop research projects.
Associate Professor Nicola Hancock is a mental health occupational therapy academic at the University of Sydney. Her research focuses on understanding mental health recovery and wellbeing, participation and inclusion. Nicola developed RAS-DS, a globally used self-report measure of mental health recovery.
Melissa Edwards is a Senior Occupational Therapist in the South Australian Forensic Mental Health Service. In her career she has worked primarily in mental health, and since 2012 in FMHS in the inpatient services. Melissa is passionate about working in this area, recently completing a Masters of Forensic Mental Health to deepen her knowledge. She has particular interest in recovery and rehabilitation across someone’s admission, trauma informed care, and transitioning to the community.
Dani Ashley is an occupational therapy educator with over 15 years' experience working as an occupational therapist in the forensic mental health field, including working with youth offenders, those with cognitive impairment as well as working in prison-based mental health services. Dani has her Master of Advanced Occupational Therapy and is passionate about practice-based evidence.
